Dvelopment and Application of Fiber Lasers

Fiber amplifiers and high-power fiber lasers are topics of rapidly increasing scientific and technical interest and potential.

The combination of laseractive fibers and fiber-Bragg-gratings, structural or nonlinaer effects in fibers and/or microstructuring of the fibers yield compact and powerful modules and light sources. Their high beam quality and different functions are well suited for various applications in the micro-processing or micro-marking of many materials.

The high-power fiber lasers with emission wavelengths in the infrared range of approximately 1 μm are development These laser systems combine high output powers of several ten watts with excellent beam quality. Such lasers are mainly used in micromaterial processing and printing technology.

Besides these high-power lasers, the fiber-based oscillator-amplifier systems are also development. With these systems, the output power of a master oscillator with outstanding characteristics but low output power can easily be increased up to the watt range. The amplification process in the fiber does not affectthe characteristics of the master oscillator.

Because of the high power densities which can be achieved in fibers, intensity-dependent effects for passive mode locking can be exploited. Fiber lasers are thus extremely well-suited for the generation of ultrashort pulses. The ultrashort pulse fiber lasers based upon erbium- and ytterbium-doped fibers with pulse durations of 50 fs were developed. The potential fields of application for these systems can be found in medical technology and micromaterial processing.
